PIMA COTTON
PIMA Cotton from Laines du Nord is a 100% Pima cotton yarn, mercerized into fiber to make it even more shiny. It is a long-staple cotton and is considered the most valuable of cottons for its qualities.
We take this opportunity to learn about some curiosities about COTTON fiber.
The origin of the term derives from the Arabic "katun" which means "land of conquest".
Cotton has been known for over five thousand years but, nevertheless, if in some parts of the world it was already known, cultivated and widely used, in Europe it became established only after the discovery of America and the development of trade with the new lands.
The textile fiber is obtained from the processing of the fruit of the cotton plant which belongs to the Malvaceae family. This plant actually has numerous subspecies and some can even reach half a meter in height. However, the life cycle of the cotton plant is always the same: after being fertilized, the flower loses its petals and, within 20/30 days, forms a capsule surrounded by a leaf called a bract. This capsule, supported by a chalice, has a rounded shape and inside are the seeds from which the balls will then develop. Only when the capsule is completely ripe, will it split to show the filaments contained in it: when this happens, the fiber present in the capsule is detached from the seeds with a process called shelling. Subsequently, the filaments are treated to eliminate all impure parts.
Cotton is therefore a material of vegetable origin composed almost entirely of cellulose plus water and other substances of mineral and protein origin, a morphology that gives it great softness and absorbency.
Returning to our Pima Cotton yarn, it was made from the finest West Indian Cotton.
PIMA COTTON by Laines du Nord stands out for its extraordinary softness accentuated by the chain stitching with which it was made. The delicate and innate shine combined with great wear resistance make it the king of cottons..
Soft as silk and very resistant, it is ideal for sensitive skin as it is hypoallergenic, as well as fresh and breathable.
Its extraordinary quality makes it perfect for fine knitting.
