Instructions for care and washing of clothes
INFORMATION ON THE CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF GARMENTS MADE WITH OUR YARNS
Advice and instructions for care and washing are always indicated on the labels and, for this very reason, it is necessary to make an initial distinction between handmade garments and those purchased in shops.
The latter are necessarily accompanied by the labels provided by the manufacturing companies, with all the instructions on the composition, care and washing of the garment.
This very short LanaOnline "instruction booklet" is intended to be a simple and useful guide to answer the following questions that we often ask ourselves:
How to wash a knitted or crocheted item?
How to wash a wool garment?
What are the instructions to follow for the care of garments?
For handmade garments, which we at LanaOnline refer to, you must instead pay attention to the instructions shown on the balls or skeins, and rarely present on the garment itself.
On the band that wraps and distinguishes the balls, on the product sheet of all the yarns we handle, the recommendations for care and washing are indicated, which vary according to the composition of the yarn itself.
Usually these tips are represented with a series of universally recognized symbols which we will talk about in depth later.
So how to behave with a handmade garment?
There are some general indications that are of great help.
As for woolen garments made with yarns labeled as "machine washable", they can be washed in the washing machine, always and only with the "wool" programme.
- The temperature of this wash cycle is always very low, max at 30°.
- Washing at temperatures lower than those indicated on the label extends the life of the garment
- High temperatures can felt. Felting is a very interesting topic to explore
- Before washing it is preferable for the garment to be turned inside out: this protects the outer side of the garment from excessive abrasion.
- Always use a delicate detergent specific for wool, without additives. It is important to use a small amount. Organic and vegetable detergents are the most recommended because they are free of proteases: this enzyme useful for removing stains can damage wool fibres.
- The Mollifly detergent from the Schachenmayr company, for example, is specific for wool and is free of alcohol, perfumes, petroleum derivatives, palm oil, etc.: it is instead composed of soapwort extracts and lactic acid, natural raw materials.
- NEVER USE SOFTENER: contrary to popular belief, softener penetrates the fibers and changes their structure permanently.
- NEVER use detergents containing BLEACH
- Do not spin
All other wool items should be hand washed or dry cleaned.
Also in this case it is better to use a delicate detergent without additives.
- Mollifly detergent is also suitable for hand washing. Make sure the detergent is completely dissolved evenly before immerse your head in water. For hand washing, check that the water is on temperature indicated on the yarn packaging.
- During washing, too much pressure or rubbing should not be applied because this could cause felting or wear of the wool.
- The wool garment must never be wrung out. Simply lay the wet garment on a terry towel, carefully stretch it to give it the desired shape and leave it flat until it is dry.
- Alternatively, the garment can be carefully rolled up in a towel sponge to draw out much of the moisture, but this should also never be wrung out.
- It is preferable not to let the garments dry in direct sunlight, for color care.
- Never hang a wet garment on a clothes hanger to dry: the additional weight of the water would cause the garment to stretch and lose its elasticity. Knitted items should always be dried flat, for example by hanging them on a towel or on a drying rack.
Ironing is often to be avoided, especially for Merino wool garments which tend to sag: it should be done at very low temperatures and without direct contact.
We remind you that wool products, thanks to their antibacterial properties, do not need to be washed after each use. It is often sufficient to leave the clothes to air outdoors
We attach a summary legend of the main washing symbols present on the bands of the balls or on your garments.
